“The ghosts you chase you never catch.” – John Malkovich Alan backed out of the door and left. His curiosity was piqued now. He had the feeling that he was being deceived. He returned to the station and went to the receptionist desk where Lisa was talking on the phone. He waited until she hung up the receiver, then resumed the conversation they had not finished when Mr. Hollenhoff had interrupted. “Okay. Once more from the top. You don’t recall a man in a navy blue suit who asked to see me?” “No,” said Lisa with a bit of annoyance in her voice. “The older man with the complaint was the only person asking for you today.” “And you didn’t see me walk out here and escort anyone in?” “Just the grumpy old man,” answered Lisa, somewhat indignantly, as if Alan was questioning her work ethic. “Okay.” Alan knew that the conversation was over. The video went on for a while. Then Alan saw a shot of himself walking through the door, turning, and re-entering the department. A few moments later Mr. Hollenhoff entered and approached the desk. Alan looked at his disgruntled face and imagined him barking his discontent at Lisa as she sat there and nodded politely. “It’s not there. Rewind it and play it again,” Alan said quickly. Then, thinking that he may have come across somewhat rude, he added, “Please.” Angela played the scene over again. “Nothing,” said Alan out loud. “I can’t believe it, he’s not there.” Maybe I imagined it, he thought. Maybe I’m too stressed out. He reached into his pocket and pulled out the badge and ID card. No, he concluded. No way I imagined it. Maybe he was out of the cameras’ viewing range when he entered the lobby. Alan made his way back down the hallway and turned to go back to his office. Michael Simmons, Alan thought. Lisa didn’t see this guy. He’s not on the camera. Neither Lieutenant Gaspero nor Karen Munsin spoke to him…
